Microsoft’s facial recognition tools just made some significant technological strides, though the timing probably couldn’t be worse .

On Tuesday, the company revealed in a blog post that its Face API, part of Azure Cognitive Services, can now identify men and women with darker skin far more successfully than previous iterations of the technology. The updates particularly improve the system’s recognition capabilities for women with darker skin tones, reducing error rates for darker-skinned men and women by as much as 20 times and reducing error rates for all women by nine times.

Microsoft stated that it was able to “significantly reduce accuracy differences across the demographics” by expanding facial recognition training data sets, initiating new data collection around the variables of skin tone, gender and age and improving its gender classification system by “focusing specifically on getting better results for all skin tones.”

“The higher error rates on females with darker skin highlights an industrywide challenge: Artificial intelligence technologies are only as good as the data used to train them. If a facial recognition system is to perform well across all people, the training dataset needs to represent a diversity of skin tones as well factors such as hairstyle, jewelry and eyewear.”

Microsoft notes that it incorporated bias training, spearheaded by Microsoft Senior Researcher Hanna Wallach, who specializes in AI fairness, accountability and transparency. Another senior researcher involved in the effort focuses on bias in training data that can result in biased systems, like the “underrepresentation of darker skinned women that may lead to AI systems with unacceptable error rates on gender classification tasks.”

While the eradication of bias in tech systems is a noble cause, the potential surveillance and policing applications of facial recognition in particular gives many critics pause. Microsoft is currently facing a backlash for its relationship with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), though the company opposed the border separation policy being enacted by the agency.

In January, Microsoft announced its intentions to move forward in contracting with ICE after securing an Authority to Operate (ATO) from the agency. The Face API within Azure Cognitive Services is part of a suite of tools offered in Azure Government contracts.

“This ATO is a critical next step in enabling ICE to deliver such services as cloud-based identity and access, serving both employees and citizens from applications hosted in the cloud,” Microsoft wrote in January .

“This can help employees make more informed decisions faster, with Azure Government enabling them to process data on edge devices or utilize deep learning capabilities to accelerate facial recognition and identification.”

A review of Australia's quarantine procedures has been undertaken after historic and valuable plant specimens from France were destroyed by biosecurity officers.

Key points:

In March, a collection of rare flowering plants sent by the Museum of Natural History in Paris to Queensland's herbarium in Brisbane was incinerated.

Michelle Waycott, who chairs the Council of Heads of Australasian Herbaria, said the pressed plant specimens dated back to the mid-1800s.

"They were the first type specimens collected of a species," she said.

"That would be the equivalent of material collected in the Flinders expedition, going and then destroying those.

"So literally irreplaceable collections and of high historic and scientific value."

Ms Waycott said it was the second similar incident in a matter of weeks.

It is understood a collection of lichen specimens from New Zealand's Allan Herbarium destined for the Australian National Herbarium in Canberra was also recently destroyed by biosecurity officers.

"The New Zealand herbaria have now banned sending any specimens to Australia," Ms Waycott said.

She said the French herbarium was also "very unhappy" with the loss of their collection.

"I suspect that they're in the process of banning sending specimens to Australia now," she said.

"They haven't said that officially though, but that would certainly be my response if it was my herbarium this had happened to."

It is common practice for herbaria around the world to swap material to help identify and understand plant species.

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterized by high blood glucose levels. Uncontrolled diabetes may result in blindness, kidney damage, heart disease, stroke, and amputations.

Hidden Danger

More than 6 million people in the United States have undiagnosed diabetes, according to the National Institutes of Health .

At UT Southwestern Medical Center, type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients receive expert and compassionate care in one of the nation's leading health care facilities. Our specialists work to help patients effectively control their diabetes and reduce or eliminate potential complications.

Also, through the Diabetes Management Program ,UTSouthwestern offers a wide variety of educational programs (in English and Spanish) for people with diabetes. A physician's referral is needed to participate in the program.

Multidisciplinary Care

We offer patients and their families comprehensive diabetes education, including programs that address diabetes during pregnancy, insulin initiation, insulin pump training, and information about kidney functions. From initial consultation through long-term follow-up care, our patients receive comprehensive treatment and education for effective diabetes management.

Most women are aware that they need to take extra care of their health during pregnancy. Women who have diabetes need to be especially careful. High blood sugar can cause health problems for both mother and baby.

UT Southwestern doctors say babies exposed to high blood sugar are at higher risk for birth defects, premature delivery, or large size that may make delivery difficult. Mothers may face the usual risks associated with diabetes, as well as higher blood pressure that could lead to seizure and stroke.

Pregnant women who have diabetes need to monitor their blood sugar levels, take medication as directed, eat a healthy diet, and exercise.

Though the most effective treatment for insulin-resistant diabetes is weight loss, losing weight can be very difficult for extremely overweight patients.

Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say nonsurgical weight-loss methods, such as dieting, aren’t successful for long-term weight loss in morbidly obese patients. Bariatric surgery , in which the size of the stomach is reduced, can help these patients lose weight.

There are many kinds of bariatric surgery, and the surgery isn’t a magical weight-loss cure-all. Patients who’ve had the surgery need nutritional counseling and lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, to lose weight and keep it off. This surgery is a major life decision, and you need to discuss your options with your doctors.

Blindness is a possible complication of diabetes. One common cause of blindness in diabetics is diabetic retinopathy. This condition is caused by damage to blood vessels in the eyes. Doctors at UT Southwestern Medical Center say a regular eye exam is as important for managing diabetes as monitoring blood sugar and watching your diet.

Not only can doctors diagnose diabetic retinopathy through an eye exam, they also gain other clues about a patient's health. Eyes are like windows to your whole body and looking at the blood vessels in your eyes can give doctors an idea of damage that might have been caused by diabetes in the rest of your body.

Diabetic retinopathy causes no symptoms in its early stages. An eye exam allows doctors to see any lesions caused by diabetes. If they detect these lesions early enough, doctors may be able to get better results with treatment and stop the damage before it becomes irreversible.

If you’re diabetic, you should have regular eye exams. If you wait until you notice problems, it may be too late to save your sight.

Our Research

Our researchers continually strive to advance the science of diabetes treatment and work in unison with our clinicians to bring these medical benefits to patients.

A study conducted by UT Southwestern researchers, for example, revealed the safety and impressive effectiveness of a “triple therapy” using insulin, metformin, and a drug in the thiazolidinedione family. Not only did the combination of treatment provide outstanding control of blood sugar levels, but it did so in the absence of weight gain, a common side effect of drug therapies for type 2 diabetes. Effectively controlling blood sugar dramatically reduces the risk of developing complications that can lead to amputations, eye disease , and kidney disease .

Additionally, UT Southwestern researchers recently identified a gene variant that may serve as an important genetic marker in identifying people at risk for type 2 diabetes. The findings could enable more effective diabetes screening techniques and allow individuals to make important lifestyle changes that could help prevent the onset of diabetes.

Research focuses on both basic and clinical aspects of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, and questions related to the impact of diabetes and obesity on cardiovascular disease outcome and cancer incidence.
